How to Prepare for Braces

Braces are a significant investment in your teeth and smile, and the process is different from almost anything else your mouth will ever experience. If you’re getting braces soon, here’s how to prepare for them.

Become Informed

While braces aren’t something you should be anxious about, it’s normal to feel minorly unsettled going into the process. Braces are unfamiliar to most people. Starting anything unfamiliar naturally comes with a little hesitancy. The best way to alleviate any anxiousness you’re experiencing is to become informed. The more you know about braces, the more comfortable you’ll be throughout the entire process. You may also be more encouraged as you can better recognize the progress being made.Reading up about braces is a good start, but your orthodontist will be the best source of information. Find an orthodontist who explains the process to you and helps you feel comfortable. Ask them all of the questions you can think of.

Get Some Basic Medicine

Braces use moderate pressure to slowly shift your teeth, and your mouth won’t be used to the sensation. It’s normal to experience slight discomfort or even mild pain at times, especially when you first get braces. You won’t need any prescription pain relievers to manage the discomfort, but a basic over-the-counter pain reliever may be helpful shortly after your first appointment. Get a bottle of ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin, whichever you prefer to use.You can also talk with your orthodontist about gels and waxes that can be applied to the gums. A few different products that provide local pain relief are available, and your orthodontist can recommend some for you to use.

Go Grocery Shopping

Your orthodontist will go over various foods that you should avoid for the duration of braces, but don’t just focus on those that are off-limits. Go grocery shopping for some foods that are especially good when you first get braces. In general, soft foods that won’t put pressure on your teeth are best right after you get braces on. Just make sure they aren’t so chewy that they could pull a bracket or wire out of place. Some good foods to consider are:

  • Oatmeal
  • Yogurt
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Smoothies
  • Soups

You might also want to eat up any chewy or crunchy foods in the house before your first appointment.
